About us

Charlton house

The Charlton And Blackheath Amateur Horticultural Society (CABAHS) was founded in 1950. We hold our monthly meetings in Charlton House, a beautiful Grade 1 listed Jacobean mansion in Charlton.

When and where

The society meets at 7.30pm on the 3rd Monday of each month except December at Charlton House, Charlton, London SE7 8RE.

Volunteer sessions in Charlton House Gardens run on Tuesdays 2-4pm and Thursdays 10am-12noon and operate as a drop-in. Anyone who loves gardening is welcome to come along.

What we do

The monthly meetings are friendly gatherings, with refreshments served, an opportunity to win a prize in our raffle, and have a good chat about gardening.

Normally, we have either a Talk, a Show or a Members evening (see Programme of events).

At meetings, members can bring in plants and flowers that are performing well in their own gardens to be displayed on the informal Show Table.

We regularly hold a Plant Sales table at meetings, where members can donate plants they have grown, and buy plants grown by other members.

Members can join our Garden Visits, organised a few times a year. As we are RHS affiliated, members’ groups can have free entry to one RHS garden each year. Members get 15% discount on plants at Provender Nurseries in Swanley.

Together with the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust, we also run a volunteer scheme aimed at revitalising the walled gardens at Charlton House. Volunteering is open to anyone local and not just members of the Society.
