The Charlton And Blackheath Amateur Horticultural Society (CABAHS) was founded in 1950. We hold our monthly meetings in the Old Library of Charlton House, a beautiful Grade 1 listed Jacobean mansion in Charlton (SE7 8RE). Membership is open to anyone who has an interest in gardening.
Indoor meetings have been suspended due to the pandemic, our talks are now held on Zoom and our Volunteer scheme in the gardens at Charlton House will re-open as soon as possible.
Normally, we have either a Talk, a Show or a Members evening (see Programme page). Together with the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust, we run a Volunteer scheme aimed at renovating the walled gardens at Charlton House. Volunteering is open to anyone local and not just members of the Society.
Members can join our Garden Visits, organised a few times a year. As we are RHS affiliated, members groups can have free entry to one RHS garden each year. We are also members of the Kent Federation of Horticultural Societies. Members get 15% discount on plants at Provender Nurseries (Swanley).
Most months we hold a Plant Sales table, full of plants grown by our own members. (This has been re-located to Charlton House walled gardens since the pandemic restrictions). At meetings, members can bring in plants and flowers that are performing well in their own gardens to be displayed on the informal Show Table.
The monthly meetings are friendly gatherings, with Refreshments served, an opportunity to win a prize in our Raffle, and have a good chat about gardening.
