Resolutions for 2026

At our January meeting, members were asked to share – anonymously – their garden-related resolutions for the coming year. In addition, the CABAHS Committee put forward a suggestion for a CABAHS-wide resolution for 2026 (more on this in a separate post).

A fine, wise, and hopefully achievable range of planned actions were submitted, with members resolving to complete practical tasks that are easily put off or forgotten, right through to adjusting their attitudes / approaches to their gardens.

Always a good start:

“I am going to actually go into my garden.”

Reconnect, observe and focus:

“Pop out into the garden daily, whatever the weather, and inspect what is appearing.”

“I will aim to focus on small patches of the garden at a time – so I tend an area at a time rather than dotting about.”

Recognise what you need…

“Clear my shed and keep it tidy, so I can get inside and stop turning the air blue.”

“Get paid help!”

“Fewer pots, cull and give away.”

…and what might help:

“I will aim to buy fewer plants and concentrate on growing and propagating my own.”

“I resolve to not keep buying plants and thinking I will find somewhere to plant them!” Likewise: “Plant out what I buy.”

“Tidy up and nurture all the cuttings that I plant & share them with neighbours and CABAHS” [thank you!]

“Plant more bulbs” and “Plant my bulbs in good time (ie not in mid-January!)”

“Don’t procrastinate in sowing seeds and find you are too late!”

“Keep this year’s Amaryllis and get it to flower again next year.”

“I must renew the compost in pots holding olive, fig and blueberry.”

“MULCH”

Finally, never underestimate the power of an admin resolution!

“Keep my birdbath clean.”

“Set up a new water butt.”

“Shred before composting.”

“Turn the compost bins.”

“I will label my seeds.”

“Remember to label where I plant bulbs and not plant on top of them.”

If any of these are your resolutions, whether you wrote them down or not, let us know how it’s going in the Comments.
