May Plant Sales 2024

May is the month for plant sales! We held two this year, our big annual one was held at Charlton House on Saturday May 18th, along with the Blackheath & Greenwich WI and a select group of other market stalls. The plants were all set out in the Peace Garden which is not only a lovely setting but also meant we didn’t have to carry them too far! Visitors started queueing outside the gates before we opened at 10, aiming for a bargain and a bit of horticultural conversation.

Our plants had mostly sold out by 12.30, which was a bit sad for latecomers. But volunteers were on hand to chat about the gardens and Stella presented her findings about the history of the garden in the Old Library.

We also had a “Bugs in the Beds” trail for the little ones and Frilly’s was open all day.

The WI sold out of its amazing display of cakes by early afternoon too – there is clearly something about plants and cakes that go together well.

Thank you to everyone who supported the event, we raised much needed funds for the walled gardens revival, the Society and the Hospice.

We also ran a stall at St Luke’s Summer Fair on Bank Holiday Monday, although a much lesser affair because we didn’t have many plants left. But it was a lovely local event with the Church Tower open to show it’s fabulous views, lots of local community stalls and music to entertain. The refreshments deserve a mention and a medal, with bagels from Brick Lane and home baked cakes. (I need to do a lot of gardening now to work off the cakes consumed!)

Thank you everyone for your support. Please continue to “go to pot”, our plants seem to be gaining a following! It’s lovely to sell to appreciative customers, you can be sure they all go to good homes.

Birds-eye view – from the top of the Tower!
